This is an unfinished work that incorporates cardboard, gesso, flour, plaster, galkyd, oil paint, a telephone, and some little birds from the store. There is a color study for this piece, but it may remain white, as it is. An informal vote has already begun. More opinions would be helpful here, so please let me know what you think.

Hmm - I like the all-white look. But perhaps one element of color (a single bird) could direct the viewer’s focus.

White with just a hint of color, be it in the interior of the phone casing just peeping out a bit (I like the idea of a sky blue or aqua blue color), and/or one (just one) of the birds in a color(s). I also like the idea of a series that uses color, or lack thereof, in different ways to convey the conceptual message behind the birds.

Elaine… There is a lot of room to move around metaphorically in this construction. The white is virginal, un-blemished, raw, calcified or bleached (possibly like a wired in telephone unit that is rapidly becoming an anachronism in the age of cellular), and wide open for individual interpretation. If you had made it all black instead, the meanings would have been equally ripe for your viewer’s interpretations, but in another direction. The birds are an interesting component. They are miniatures and can be utilized as equivalents for messengers (as in carrier pigeons) … or going back to the petrified concept, that birds are the descendents of dinosaurs and these are the only tiny creatures that are left when there is no one left to talk to on the telephone.

Amazing comments. Thank you all who responded. I feel like the majority was interested in a splash of color. So I put on just one small piece of Windsor & Newton Permanent Madder Medium mixed with a touch of Rembrandt Prussian Blue. I will post it soon. I’m also planning on doing a series of bird variations for the January 4Art show.
I love the idea of calcified and bleached white. It’s impossible to tell from the digital photograph, but in real life there is the slightest hint of warm brown glaze that makes it look weathered and just a tiny bit dirty even in the face of all that whiteness. It is definitely a near antiquated phone plate. I like that it’s a business telephone. Originally, I had thought of the holes in the phone plate opening up over pools of light blue, because the effect of the birds gathering around it reminded me of what happens at a water cooler, as much as it did a desert watering hole.
Carrier pidgeons are a wonderful idea. To me they look like sparrows, which I’ve always thought of as gregarious birds. But the carrier pidgeon interpretation is great, because it’s another kind of bird that talks in its own way.
The idea that they stand in for dinosaurs is true. I also heard recently of the idea that birds are serious bad luck. I’d never heard of such a thing before, and I am very intrigued. I think I should watch the Hitchcock movie.
I am definitely intent on doing a few variations using birds. I am sure that one of these variations will end up all white, and another will end up mostly black.
Topographical maps are a great point of reference. A lot of my other pieces also use an aerial view. One of my favorite early memories is of looking at the textures and patterns in topographical maps. In the last few years it’s evolved into an interest in aerial photographers (like Arthus-Bertrand) as well as a fascination with satellite imagery and google maps.
